Inventing usually starts at a young age, and children usually start to become better and better investors as they grow older with time. One young inventor, Mathew Wood, said “I love inventing; it gives me something to do and is loads of fun.” Many of the worlds renowned inventors starting inventing at a very young age, and as they grew older, their inventions matured with them.
Lewis Frederick Urry, who invented the alkaline battery and lithium battery while working for Eveready Batteries, would almost have certainly been interested in chemistry as a kid. He probably enjoyed it as much as Thomas Alva Edison would have enjoyed light emitting devices as a boy.
And of course, we mustn’t leave out Albert Einstein, who was doing calculus in his early teens and later went on to invent quantum mechanics. This allowed him to prove the theories of relativity and mass–energy equivalence.
So many profound inventors would have started inventing only when they where children and, of course, their inventions that were made when they where children wouldn’t have worked. However, those childhood inventions were the building blocks for the inventions that brought them greatness.
Kids, if interested inventing, should be encouraged in every way possible to invent. This is because, not only are they doing something that could potentially lead to a world changing invention, but they are also having fun. They are improving their grey matter at the same time, and there is nothing more important than that.
When we see a child build a model boat from wood that they found in the back yard and it works, we see a look of glee in their face because they have made something. Everyone looks around in amazement at the child’s creation. That makes the child feel as if they have really achieved something. It does loads for that child self esteem and confidence.
It also teaches children skills such as persistence and patience. Often, inventing something can take a long time and requires a-lot of persistence to get it right. Many times, these are qualities that kids in the 21st century need to develop and are healthy for kids to develop. By inventing, they are learning that if they have enough patience to not get frustrated when something doesn’t work, enough persistence will ensure that it does work. That can lead to a very well-adjusted child in a society that is very much orientated on this “microwave fix” to everything. Of course, in reality this isn’t always the case.
Kids should be encouraged to invent in groups also. This can help children develop good communication and team building skills that will help them function as a part of society later in life. A lot can be said for a kid who can invent, but a lot more can be said for a kid who can invent with others. It helps a child develop maturity and become a well-adjusted member of society.
Inventing and children truly are a winning combination and every child, if they are interested in inventing, should be supported and encouraged in their endeavours.
